The demand for furniture has never been as high as it is today in so many countries around the world. The growth rates for the furniture industry are gaining additional momentum, driven by the dynamic growth on the "emerging markets". World production of furniture is worth about US$ 406 bn. The main furniture producer is China, with 41% of world furniture production. Other major furniture manufacturing countries are the US, Germany, Italy, India, Poland, the UK, Japan, Canada and South Korea. From 2006 to 2015 production in Asia and Pacific increased by 2.5 times (from US$ 87 bn to US$ 223 bn) while changes in other regions of the world were comparatively minor. As a consequence, in 2015 more than half of world furniture production took place in Asia and the Pacific.

Within Europe, Germany represents the most important furniture market. In 2016 the industry posted revenues of 18 bn. euros, with 3.5 per cent revenue increase year-on-year. The German furniture industry employed roughly 84,000 employees in 500 firms in 2016.

The increasing international success of the German furniture industry can be seen in export rates climbing to roughly 32 percent. This represents a doubling of the export rate within the last 15 years. The good export performance can be traced back in particular to the development boom in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, Denmark and Qatar, where the highest growth rates are currently being achieved. The most important export market for the German furniture industry remains however the European Union, with a 70% share in the overall export volume, followed by Eastern Europe at 15%, Asia at 8% and North America at 5%. Driven by the economic recovery in the EU, German furniture exports grew by about 2 per cent in the year 2016.

German furniture benefited from its premiere quality and good design in foreign markets. Furniture "Made in Germany" will remain an admission ticket for many new markets in the future as well. By opening up additional markets beyond the neighbouring states, German furniture makers have succeeded in making themselves more independent from the economic cycles in Europe.

The interzum guangzhou is the exclusive forum for the woodworking and furniture industry in China. It is THE essential showcase for the suppliers as well as related products, services and technologies. This year the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the AUMA - Association of the German Trade Fair Industry  are once again supporting a German group participation, giving 22 companies the possibility to present their excellent products and to offer their renowned services to key players and decision makers from all over China.

On behalf of all exhibitors, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), the AUMA - Association of the German Trade Fair Industry and the Head Association of the German Woodworking and Furniture Industries (HDH) wish all participants a successful show and extend a warm welcome to all visitors of the German Pavilions in halls 11.1 and 15.1.
